Rollup calculations automatically aggregate data from child records and display it on their parent record.
This feature allows you to understand the bigger picture without digging into each detail.
Here, we'll also show you how to access this feature and show you how to get started.
Rollup Feature Overview:
Rollups work with number and date fields for both integrated (e.g., Jira) and non-integrated data in all Visor views.
This feature automatically generates calculations. Therefore, if you sync Visor with Jira, your rollup calculations will adjust to the freshest data you brought into Visor.
Options for Number & Date Field Rollups:
Rollups have different calculations (or "operations") for number fields than date fields. Here, we'll go over the differences.
Number Field Rollups:
Visor supports five different operations for rolling up number fields:
- Sum
- Average
- Minimum
- Maximum
- Median.
When you create a rollup field, Visor will automatically generate a field name based on the operation and the source field you select. You can always rename this field to match your team’s preferences.
Date Field Rollups:
Visor supports two types of rollup operations for date fields:
-
Earliest – Shows the first date any child record begins
-
Latest – Shows the last date any child record ends
These rollups are especially useful when plotting Gantt charts or Timelines. For example, using the earliest start date from child records ensures the parent record reflects when work actually begins—giving you accurate, time-based visibility for planning.
Similar to the number rollup configuration, Visor will auto-generate a field name for your rollup field. You can always edit this name. In addition, you can include or ignore the values in a parent record.
How to Access Rollup Fields
There are two different ways to create a rollup field.
Option #1: Select from a field's dropdown menu
Click on the number or date field that you want to roll up in view settings. A dropdown menu will appear that contains the option to "Roll up in a new field".
In this Table view screenshot below, you'll see that the "Story Points" field from Jira was clicked, making the rollup option available. Note that this option will only appear for date and number fields.
Option #2: Add a field in your workbook
You can also click "Add a field" in any Visor view.
From there, you will see that "Rollup" is an option in our field selection menu.
You will then see a configuration screen where you can select what source field (e.g., Story Point or Start Date) that you want this rollup field to calculate.
How to Plot Gantt or Timeline Charts with Rollup Dates
When you create a rollup field using a start or end date field, your Gantt or Timeline view will not automatically update to use that new rollup field.
You will have to go and plot your chart to use the rollup date field.
See example below:
Note: When you're using rollup date fields to plot your Gantt chart, the bars will not be draggable since the rollup fields are read only. You may want to handle this in 2 different ways:
-
- Add the source date fields into the left hand side table and edit via those cells.
- Create a 2nd Gantt chart powered by the source fields from Jira and use the Gantt chart to adjust the dates of the children. These changes will be reflected in the rolled-up Gantt chart automatically.
As always, you can edit the source fields in any other view as well.
