About Board View
Board View, sometimes known as a Kanban view, allows users to visualize their data as "cards" or squares of information that can be moved from column to column. Visor's Board View allows you to plot data by one or two fields, format your cards, and add fields so that your relevant information is displayed at a glance. Let's dive into it!
Setting up a Board View
Selecting Plotted Data fields
Board View allows you to choose to plot your data by either only columns or columns and lanes. The Column Field will be the field by which your data plots up and down, while the optional Lanes Field will be the field that your data plots from left to right.
Columns Field
Selecting a Columns field is mandatory in Visor and will be the field by which your columns are organized. Think of your column field as a "header" or title for your vertically plotted information. Plotting by only the Column field allows you to focus your data on one specific field, such as "Status." You can use this Kanban-style board to group your data by the Columns filed.
Lanes Field (optional)
Selecting a Lanes field is optional in Visor but gives you an additional way to organize your Board View. Think of your lane field as a "header" or title for your horizontally plotted information. Plotting by both columns and lanes allows you to visualize your data by two different fields, such as "Status" and "Assignee."
Working within Board View
Drag & drop data updating
Updating your data in Board View is as simple as dragging and dropping the record or card you want to update to a new location. For example, in the workbook below, we have plotted our data by "Assignee" for the columns and "Status" for the lanes. To update the Assignee of any record, you would drag that record left or right and drop it under the new assignee. To update the status of any record, you would drag it up or down and drop it in the lane of the status you would like it updated to. To update both Assignee and Status, you can drag and drop the issue in both the column and lane you see fit.
Formatting and adding fields
Formatting
To format your data, click the "Formatting" button at the top of your workbook. From there, you can format any dropdown field and choose which field's formatting you'd like to see visually by switching the toggle to "On" next to that field.
Adding Fields
To add fields to your cards, click on "Fields shown" from your View Settings. From there, you'll be able to add as many fields as you want directly visible on each of your cards in Board View.
Hiding and Showing Columns
In the View Settings area, you can also hide or show columns. Go to the upper left-hand corner and click on the field name under Columns. Here, you can select or unselect which columns you want to show. You can also use this section to move columns around or use the toggle to automatically hide all empty columns.
Record detail updating
Your records can be changed and updated at any time by clicking on a record. This opens the Record Details Panel, a detailed side panel that shows an editable overview of your record. To learn more about working with the Record Details Panel, check out this article.
When to use Board View
The Board View is best suited for:
- Teams using Kanban as their preferred project management style
- Users or teams who want to use drag and drop as their main method for updating data or want to be able to update two fields on a record at once
- Users or teams who want to view lots of data about a single record at once without scrolling back and forth through a spreadsheet-type view
- Teams that need to focus on project management data that does not involve dates
- Teams who prefer a grid-style type data visualization but prefer a card-type style to a classic spreadsheet style
